Urbanology: Magnesium, A Hidden Treasure by W.A.Rogers

Categories: William “Tony” Rogers,

Most people are not aware of the numerous ways that Magnesium can keep them healthy by addressing the root cause of most major illnesses, Magnesium Deficiency. A great book to learn about the benefits of magnesium is “Magnificent Magnesium: Your Essential Key to A Healthy Heart & More” by Dennis Goodman, MD.

In his book, Dr. Goodman provides information from scientific studies focused on the health benefits of having a significant amount of this magnificent mineral, which is truly a hidden treasure, in our bodies.  Dr. Goodman also asks why this information is being kept from the public.  80 percent of Americans are magnesium deficient.

Research has shown that a deficiency in magnesium is a major cause of: heart disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, muscle cramps, fatigue, depression, asthma, migraine, insomnia and a host of other diseases which all cause the lack of absorption of: protein, calcium, minerals and nutrients.

We now know that the root cause of most illnesses is stress, which depletes our immune system, causing magnesium deficiency and cellular loss, which in turn causes disease.  This is an important reason to begin some type of stress management program if you are not involved in one now.

One of the most alarming facts that Dr. Goodman writes about in his book is the research that shows magnesium deficiency being a major cause of heart attacks, the number one killer in America.  Cardiac Arrest to me is the most frightening heart disease.

Each year an estimated 295,000 Americans suffer cardiac arrest; only 8 percent will survive if the incident occurs out of a hospital.  Cardiac arrest is when the heart abruptly stops due to an electrical disturbance that prevents the heart from pumping blood to the rest of the body.

Cardiac arrest can be sudden; individuals can seem perfectly healthy and suffer from this dangerous disease.  It is important to know the symptoms of cardiac arrest which include chest pains, shortness of breath, nausea, or vomiting, faintness or dizziness, because cases not treated within ten minutes usually end in death; a reason why basic training in CPR is very important.

Stress management and the proper levels of magnesium are your first line of defense against heart disease, being proactive, knowledgeable and aware is the best strategy to address any illness.  That is why this publication, WHCR 90.3FM and events like Harlem Holistic Wellness Week are important sources for this type of information.  If we do not support and educate ourselves, no one else will.

You can take magnesium as a supplement but dietitians recommend you try to get it from food sources before going that route. Foods like Whole Brazil nuts, cooked Spinach, Kale, Green Peas, Avocados  and Cashew nuts, are foods rich in management.

Tests such as a magnesium blood test can measure the amount of Magnesium in your blood system. Most of your body’s magnesium is stored in your bones, organs, and body tissue. Only a small amount of magnesium can be found in the blood.

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body. It is a key mineral that the body uses to support healthy function. It is truly a hidden treasure.
