Description

The play “Purpose”, is currently in previews at the Helen Hayes Theater, located at 240 W 44^th Street. Written by African American playwright, Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins and directed by Phylicia Rashad, it tells the story of the Jasper family, a pillar of Black American politics: civil rights leaders, pastors, and congressman. But the family also has cracks and secrets and when the youngest son Nazareth returns home with an uninvited friend, the family is forced into reckoning with itself, its faith and legacies of Black politics and duty to family. This production features a crème de la crème of Black actors. LaTanya Richardson Jackson (Claudine Jasper); Harry Lennix (Solomon “Sonny” Jasper); Glenn Davis (Solomon “Junior” Jasper); Alana Arenas (Morgan Jasper); Jon Michael Hill (Nazareth “Naz” Jasper, and Kara Young (Aziza Houston). Understudies will include theater legends including Petronia Paley (Claudine Jasper) and Esau Pritchett (Solomon Jasper), along with Chris Myers (Nazareth Jasper & Junior Jasper) and Sojourner Brown (Aziza Houston and Morgan Jasper).
