Linda Armstrong has been a theater critic for more than 36 years. She has worked with Harlem Community News to produce the “Blacks on Broadway” feature for more than 25 years. The publisher of Harlem News, Pat Stevenson came up with the idea as a way to showcase the Broadway shows who were hiring Black actors and to encourage her readers to patronize those shows. When they began this venture there were only a couple of shows and about 30 Black actors and most in minor roles. Now in 2021 there are more than 30 shows and more than 200 Black actors and a headshot of each one of them who have signed contracts as of August 2021 were featured in the August 5, 2021 “Black on Broadway” feature issue. Next Harlem News will feature “Blacks Off Broadway” and will continue to report on “Blacks on Broadway” in weekly articles.
